Over the past two years, dozens of organizations used Facebook's Data for Good products to improve wellbeing and save lives. Their most profound applications include disaster preparedness projects, vaccination campaigns, and effective deployment of services during times of natural disaster.
Quantifying the dynamics of migration after Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico
Understanding the population composition and distribution of a region affected by a major natural disaster is vital for the allocation of resources to communities in need and critical to inform mortality estimates. The utilization of social media traces, coupled with mobile phone data, could provide live estimates of post-disaster population changes in disaster-affected areas.

The Role of Social Networks in Bank Lending
This paper analyzes social connectedness as an information channel in bank lending. We move beyond the inefficient lending between peers in exclusive networks by exploiting Facebook data that reflect social ties within the U.S. population. After accounting for physical and cultural distances, social connectedness increases cross-county lending, especially when lending requires more information and screening incentives are intact.
Many Displaced from Hurricane Laura Are Now in Path of Hurricane Delta
Hurricane Delta is set to make landfall as a Category 2 storm on the coast of Louisiana and western Mississippi on Friday, Oct. 9. This would be a serious situation under any circumstance, but for those still displaced from the last major storm in this area, Hurricane Laura, which made landfall on Aug. 26, the impact is likely to be doubly hard. According to the best available estimates roughly 8,000 homes were damaged during the impact of Hurricane Laura, and many people have yet to return.
The 2019-2020 Australian Bushfires: From Temporary Evacuation to Longer-term Displacement
Bushfires that raged across Australia triggered around 65,000 new displacements between July 2019 - February 2020. They also destroyed more than 3,100 homes, potentially leading to longer-term displacement for thousands of people. This report presents the first comprehensive figures and analysis of the patterns of displacement associated with the 2019 - 2020 bushfire season.
Humanitarian Needs: Food, Water..and data?
The three simple words, “I am alive,” can bring peace of mind after disasters. But after Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Puerto Ricans had very little opportunity to impart that crucial message to family members outside of their own neighborhoods. Connectivity isn’t often spoken about as a humanitarian imperative, but to people worried about the fate of their loved ones, it’s as essential as food and water.
Direct Relief Responds as Wildfires Burn In Northern California
This map details evacuation patterns as a result of the Carr Fire near Redding, California, on Monday, July 30, 2018. The lighter gray squares show areas of lower population, while the darker pink squares show areas of higher population, revealing where people have evacuated, away from the fire, which is outlined in red. This data was derived from Facebook's Disaster Maps tool, which shares aggregated insights from the Facebook platform with NGOs working in disaster response.
